Paragliding World Cup 2011 - News

Following discussions with the local organisers in Bayramoren (Turkey) and Ager (Spain), it has been decided that the next events will continue in the normal World Cup manner and within our existing rules - this includes the flying of Open Class gliders.

The Paragliding World Cup is aware of the complexity of the ongoing situation and will continue to act according to the wishes of our competitors. Decisions for the future will be discussed at the General Assembly in Ager, Spain.

Francisco "Tato" Vargas and Eitel von Muhlenbrock

In this moment of grief for Xavier, we would like to extend our deepest condolences to the families, loved ones and fellow pilots of Francisco "Tato" Vargas and Eitel von Muhlenbrock, who lost their lives during the second task of the World Championships in Piedrahita, Spain.

Such a loss in such a short time is creating unbearable pain and regret in our hearts. Just the hope that all of them are at better place is keeping us going on.

Tragic outcome.

The aerial search organized and led this morning (July 7th) by Mike allowed to find Xavier's body at 12:23 (local time). Xavier was found in the west face of the Huascaran Norte (6768m) at an altitude of 4700m.

The most likely scenario is that Xavier was taking some pictures of this impressive mountain when he lost control of his paraglider. It looks like he opened his reserve but he quickly died from his injuries.

Again we want to express our deepest sympathy to the family and to all the people that he inspired during his engaged and exciting life.
