Last 2006 task
for Christian Maurer

Pictures from the prize giving ceremony

Saturday, November 11th : 65km race started at 10:15, Sprungli and Brauner are winning.

The pilots are having free coffee, tea and brioche at take-off as everyday. Before the task, Christian Maurer is taking off with scuba-diving equipment. He is already sure to win the World Cup 2006. A few minutes later, he top-land to start with all the others at 9:50.

For women, teams and nations and also for the Réunion World Cup result, everything is still possible. The task is 65km long and the weak conditions are quite similar as the day before. Climbing is difficult from the beginning, like the two previous tasks, the sink rateand the quality of the gliders is making a difference.

Most of the top pilots are arriving in the south, in the flat part of the task. Merigout and Sivignon are landing while Maurer and Brauner manage to go up. Blondeau, Sprungli and others are taking another route further in the land towards the famous Réunion volcano (Piton de la Fournaise).

Brauner, Maurer meet Sprungli and Blondeau at the last turnpoint in the south. The whole area is covered by clouds. They slowly slip to the sea where they start to soar on a 80m high cliff. To go towards the goal which is still 10km away, they leave the sea side to try to go as far as possible and land almost together between 56.5 and 56.3km.

With this result, Greg Blondeau comes back in second position for the competition result.

Petra Krausova wins the task and comes back in second position in the World Cup female ranking.

In the team ranking, Mac Para makes a perfect finish, winning the task and the World Cup overall.

Tonight, the prize giving ceremony will start in the World Cup village at 19:00.

Thursday, November 9th : 53km race, with 43 pilots in goal...

Today's task had a goal in St Paul. The beginning of the race is not so easy as conditions are weak. Many others are very low around the main goal on the beach, some barelly above 50m over the ground.

Most of them finally manage to get some lift to climb again but a group of 20 pilots do not make it and land in the main goal after flying only 10km.

Bruno Arnold and Christian Maurer both cross the goal line almost at the same time, but Bruno is just a few meters ahead of Christian. Due to rounding in our scoring formula, they both get 1000 points. Stefan Wyss is third and scores for the Spaelti team.

Karin Appenzeller is the first woman to reach goal, followed by Elisa Houdry and Eliane Ueltschi.

This task is the 15th task in the World Cup ranking meaning that with have one more task discarded. It will be the last one as only 2 more tasks can still be flown and discards happen every 3 tasks.

No big change in the overall World Cup ranking, Christian Maurer still leads and is almost unreachable with 289 points more than Greg Blondeau who is in second position. Tomas Brauner is still third, but Primoz Pdobnik and Denis Cortella are not that far behind him.

In the World Cup women ranking, Karin comes back in first position and Petra moves in second. Anja stays in third position but Keiko is very close to her (only 36 points difference).

French pilots had troubles yesterday and swiss is coming back in 1st position with more than 500 points ahead.

For the competition ranking, Christian Maurer remains first, Bruno Arnold is second and Primoz Podobnik is third. Petra is leading the competition, with Anja second and Eliane third.

Two more tasks... during the briefing at launch, Xavier Murillo announced that a long task is planned for tomorrow... maybe 100km...

The meet director has complained about 3 pilots who reported back late after landing and ask the jury to take a decision about this.

Wednesday, November 8th : Race started in the afternoon... but cancelled

The conditions are east wind with cirrus in altitude. Cloudbase is quite low around 800m. The pilots are flying with very weak conditions (0.5m/s), but suddenly, when the cirrus are vanishing the thermal activity becomes very strong up to +10 m/s, which is unusual here. This activity in increasing the wind. Some pilots are using the safety frequency to warn the organization about the conditions becoming dangerous, and the Meet Director decide to stop the task, which is finally cancelled as the pilots have been flying less than our minimum of 1h30 to score it.

In the evening, pilots are attending our annual General Assembly. A full report will be posted very soon about it (see the News page).

Tuesday, November 7th : 62km race with 48 pilots in goal

Early wake-up for the pilots today ! The departure time for the take-off is set to 7:00 as we move to Bellemene, near Saint Paul.

A group of pilot is having trouble with the famous "Plateau Caillou" area and land there after flying only 7km but sometime several hours of flight.

Greb Blondeau wins one more task, and Christian Maurer is again the second in goal remaining. Stefan Morgenthaler is third in goal.

For the women, Petra is again the first in goal, Anja Kroll is second and Eliane Ueltschi is third.

Christian Maurer is leading the competition and World Cup ranking, same for Greg Blondeau in second position in the competition and World Cup ranking. Primoz Podobnik is third in the competition result, and Tomas Brauner is third in the World Cup ranking (with Primoz just behind him).

Petra stays in first position for the competition and World Cup ranking, followed by Anja Kroll and Caroline Brille in the competition ranking, and Karin Appenzeller and Anja Kroll in the World Cup ranking.

The weather forecast for tomorrow is expecting more humidity... which means more clouds and some rain...

Monday, November 6th : 63km race with 60 pilots in goal

Same as yesterday, the task starts at 10:30 as the thermal activity is quite good in the morning and decreasing in the afternoon due to the usual cloud cover caused by the trade winds going around the island.

Today was an unusual day for the thermal activity allowing many pilots to reach 1500m and have a wonderful view on most of the island including the volcano area.

Greg Blondeau wins the task, Luca Donini is second and Bruno Arnold is third taking the lead in the local competition result.

Petra Krausova is the first woman reaching goal, Caroline Brille is second and Anja Kroll third.

Sunday, November 5th : 47km race

Early start today !

A 47 km race is starting at 10:30. On the first turnpoint, a group of 15 pilots already take the lead. A second group take the advantage of a good thermal on the 3rd turnpoint and almost join the leading group. Cloud coverage reduce thermal activity and forces many pilots to lands or reach goal with difficulty.

Denis Cortella is winning the task, Christian Maurer is second and Robert Bernat is third. Elisa Houdry is the only woman reaching goal, Petra Krausova and Keiko Hiraki land at 42.6km.
